“My name is Žiga Zois, and iron paid for every book I ever bought. My family's forges stood in this valley; the villagers still carry the word for them in the name of their settlement. I could not climb these mountains myself — my legs failed me young — so I…”

This month: The beech above the gorge turns gold and rust, and the low sun through Mostnica's canopy is worth stopping for.
When to go: Morning, before the lakeshore fills; the Dairy Museum keeps short seasonal hours, so check before counting on going in.
Ribčev Laz sits at the edge of Lake Bohinj, where a wooded gorge, a herding village and the mountains above all sit within walking distance of each other. The Mostnica Gorge cuts through limestone above Stara Fužina, the old ironmaster's manor and parish church still stand in the village that took its name from the forges, and the path on to the lake passes a wayside shrine, a national park information centre and the bronze statue of Zlatorog on the shore. Seeing it on foot, rather than by car, is what lets the gorge, the village and the lake connect as one line rather than three separate stops.
This self-guided audio walk, The Ironmaster's Lake, is narrated by Žiga Zois, the baron whose family forges once lit this valley and whose money paid other men to climb the mountains he could not. It runs about 120 minutes over 4.8 km, follows your phone's GPS so you don't need to watch a map, and is free to try, with offline download for when the valley loses signal. It suits a first visit to Bohinj, a spare morning before the lake crowds arrive, and works well solo or as a couple.
