Village walk · Lake Bohinj, Ribčev Laz · Slovenia
1747–1819 · a real person
an ageing Enlightenment baron, dry and courteous, in love with rock, water and stubborn mountain people
My name is Žiga Zois, and iron paid for every book I ever bought. My family's forges stood in this valley; the villagers still carry the word for them in the name of their settlement. I could not climb these mountains myself — my legs failed me young — so I paid other men to climb, to measure, to bring me back stones. Walk this line for me, from the water that cut the gorge down to the lake it feeds. I want to see what my valley has become.

Best time to walk: Morning, before the lakeshore fills; the Dairy Museum keeps short seasonal hours, so check before counting on going in.
You’re walking this one before anyone at Walk & Tell has. If something looks wrong, tap Report at any stop — we’ll fix it for everyone after you.
A single line from the Mostnica Gorge down through Stara Fužina to the lakeshore at Ribčev Laz. The guide is Žiga Zois, the Enlightenment baron whose family ironworks gave Stara Fužina its name, and who paid men to climb Triglav and write the valley down. It is a story walk: no puzzles, just one tale handed on from stop to stop. It ends where everyone ends, at the water.

The Zois family ran the ironworks that named Stara Fužina and owned the manor here, and Zois paid for the scientific exploration of Triglav and Bohinj.

1747–1819
Baron Žiga (Sigmund) Zois was a Carniolan industrialist, mineralogist and patron of the Slovene Enlightenment. His family's wealth came from iron, including forges in the Bohinj valley; the mineral zoisite carries his name. From his Ljubljana house he supported writers such as Valentin Vodnik and Jernej Kopitar, and he funded collecting and climbing in the Julian Alps. Illness confined him to a chair for much of his later life, and he died in 1819.
