“I am Edwin Lutyens, and I drew a great deal of what is under your feet. That arch ahead of me carries the names of thousands of men, and I was asked to make grief look like architecture. Then I have to walk home through a city that refuses to stay as tidy as…”

When to go: Early morning or after 4pm. The India Gate lawns and Kartavya Path have no shade at midday, and Agrasen ki Baoli closes at 5:30pm.
New Delhi rewards walkers who leave the car behind: a 14th-century stepwell dropping 108 steps underground, the astronomical instruments of Jantar Mantar, the wide sweep of Janpath market, and the green circle of Connaught Place all sit within a single walkable stretch. Seen from a bus window these are dots on a map; on foot they become one continuous story about a city built in layers, old stone beneath colonial avenues beneath modern shopfronts.
Walk & Tell turns that stretch into a self-guided audio walk led by Sir Edwin Lutyens, the architect who designed much of Lutyens' Delhi and is walking home past his own work. GPS cues bring in each stop as you reach it, the walk runs about 90 minutes over 4.6 km, and it's free to try and works offline once downloaded, so you're not depending on signal near Jantar Mantar or the market stalls. It suits a first visit to New Delhi, a spare afternoon, or anyone happy walking solo or as a couple who wants New Delhi in a few hours rather than a rushed group tour.
Walk & Tell is a self-guided audio walking-tour app. Walks are free to try; download one for offline before you set out. All cities
