Fountain of Joy, Dhirubhai Ambani Square
“I am Gerard Aungier, and in the 1670s I governed a wet, unprofitable set of islands called Bombay. I drew a line across the north of it, against the Portuguese across the water, and I built forts on the hillocks to hold it. I have come back to walk that line…”

When to go: Early morning or after 5pm. Gandhi Market is busiest and best in the evening; the Nature Park keeps daytime hours and is closed on some Mondays, so check before you set out.
Mumbai rewards a walker more than a taxi window ever will. On one route alone you cross from the noise and colour of Gandhi Market, past the edge of Dharavi and its open-air leather trade, through a birdwatching park grown on a former rubbish dump, and out into the glass towers of Bandra-Kurla Complex. Seeing that change happen under your own feet, over a few hours, tells you something about the city that no bus tour can.
Walk & Tell turns this into a self-guided audio walk: Gerard Aungier, the 17th-century governor who first drew a boundary across these islands, narrates as GPS tracks your position and plays each stop when you arrive. The walk runs about three hours at an easy pace, is free to try, and downloads for offline use, so a patchy signal near the creek won't stop you. It suits a first visit to Mumbai, a spare afternoon, or anyone walking solo or as a couple who wants things to do in Mumbai on foot rather than from behind glass.
