When to go: Morning or after five. The Last Supper needs a ticket booked weeks ahead; the park and the arch have little shade at midday, and Brera is closed on Mondays.
Milan rewards walking more than almost any Italian city its size: the distance from Santa Maria delle Grazie to the Duomo is a straight, walkable line through fortress, arcade and cathedral square, and covering it on foot lets you feel how the city was rebuilt, torn down and rebuilt again. A bus would skip past the plaque marking the 1848 rising and the quiet monument to Leonardo that most visitors never notice among the crowds heading for the Galleria.
This self-guided audio walk is narrated by Luca Beltrami, the architect who rebuilt Sforza Castle and had a hand in much of what stands along the route. GPS triggers each stop as you reach it, the whole walk runs about ninety minutes over 4.3 km, and it's free to try, with the option to download for offline use so data isn't a concern. It suits a first visit to Milan, a spare afternoon between meetings, or anyone wanting a couple of hours that add up to real orientation rather than a checklist.
