Predaselj valley
Mali Predoselj
“My name is Jernej. I cut wood in this valley for forty winters, and I never once paid for a drink of water. Today you will walk from the place where the river is born to the place where it sings, and I will talk the whole way. Do not hurry: the valley does…”

This month: The beech turns gold above the gorge now, and the smell of wet leaf and wood smoke follows you the whole walk up from the spring.
When to go: Morning, any season but deep winter. The valley road is cool and shaded; after heavy rain the gorge paths are slippery and the waterfall is loudest.
Kamnik's best scenery is not in the old town but up the Kamniška Bistrica valley, where a single river carves its way from a karst spring down through narrow gorges to a waterfall that locals call the little organ. Walking it beats driving through: you stop at the Firštova miza stone, look into the tight rock slot of Mali Predoselj, and stand at the Predaselj gorge where the water squeezes hard between the cliffs, none of which registers at thirty miles an hour. It's a proper few hours on foot, through shaded valley road and steeper hillside path.
Walk & Tell turns this into a guided walk without a guide. Jernej, a woodsman who worked the valley for forty winters, narrates as you go, triggered by GPS so you just walk and listen. The full route runs about 372 minutes and 4.6 km, though you can do any stretch of it. It's free to try and the audio downloads for offline use, which matters once you're past the last bit of signal near the spring. Good for a first visit to Kamnik, a solo hike, or a couple with a spare morning.
