“I am Basil, bishop of Caesarea, and once I told men who wanted God that they should not go and get Him alone. Dig your cells, I said, but dig them near each other, eat at one table, share one loaf. Sixteen hundred years later my name is on a chapel here and…”
Göreme Open-Air MuseumSunset PointGüvercinlik (Pigeon) Valley
This month: Autumn is quiet and clear, the poplars along Güvercinlik Vadisi turning yellow, a fine month for walking the pigeon valley toward Uçhisar.
When to go: Morning before 10am, when the balloons are down and the museum is quiet, or from 5pm so you finish at Pigeon Valley with the light low. The Open-Air Museum charges admission and closes in the late afternoon; midday on Müze Caddesi is hot and shadeless.
Göreme is a village stitched into volcanic rock, and almost everything worth seeing is either a cave, a carved chapel, or a viewpoint you reach by walking uphill from the last one. The painted churches of the Open-Air Museum, a rug house full of nomadic kilims, the Roman castle outcrop, and Pigeon Valley's trailhead all sit within a couple of kilometres of each other, close enough that a bus would only get in the way. On foot, and slowly, the whole bowl of the valley opens up in a way no window seat can match.
Walk & Tell turns that walk into something narrated: here, by Basil of Caesarea, the fourth-century bishop whose name is on a chapel and on the valley itself, who asks along the way whether the communal life he preached to hermits actually held. It's GPS-led, about 80 minutes and 2.7 km, free to try and downloadable for offline use, so a patchy signal in the lanes above the museum won't stop the story. Good for a first visit, a spare afternoon before or after a balloon ride, or anyone walking alone or as a couple who'd rather have context than a map.
Walk & Tell is a self-guided audio walking-tour app. Walks are free to try; download one for offline before you set out. All cities
