an old alpine herder, slow, dry, practical, tender only about cattle and weather
My name is Matija. I was a herder on the Big Pasture, and I walked this road up every June with the cattle and down every autumn with the cheese. The road has not changed much; the people on it have. Walk with me and I will tell you what each turn of it meant to a man with forty animals behind him. Keep your pace slow — the mountain does not reward hurry.

Best time to walk: June to September, morning. Start early: the upper plateau is open and treeless, and afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer. In winter the upper part is a ski area and the path may be snow-covered.
You’re walking this one before anyone at Walk & Tell has. If something looks wrong, tap Report at any stop — we’ll fix it for everyone after you.
A 4.1 km climb from the hamlet of Planina Dol to the shingled huts of the Big Pasture Plateau, told by a herder who made this walk every June of his working life. It passes a wayside cross, two pasture clearings, a hunting lodge, karst caves that swallow the rain, and ends among the oval huts of one of Europe's last living high pastures. No puzzles — just the story of milk, cheese, snow and stone.

Matija is an invented character, written to speak for the real herders of the Big Pasture Plateau. The facts around him are documented: the plateau covers 5.8 square kilometres at about 1,500 metres, its herders lived in oval wooden huts under shingle roofs, and the pasture has been grazed in summer for centuries. His words are imagined; the working life he describes is not.
Matija the Herder is a character created for this game.
