Village walk · Poland, Głogowa · Poland
1849–1921
an old country coachman, slow, dry, fond of horses and suspicious of hurry
My name is Walenty Krzak, and I drove this road when it was mud eight months of the year. Five villages, one line, and a manor house at the end of it where my wages were counted out. Today you walk it; I never once walked it, I had horses for that. Come. The road does not bend, so you cannot get it wrong.

Best time to walk: Morning or late afternoon — this is open farmland with almost no shade, and the road is long between houses.

This is a walk across open country in Gmina Krośniewice, where the land is flat, the roads are straight and the villages are small. It begins at the nineteenth-century manor house at Głogowa and runs in one line through the hamlets to Miłonice. There are no puzzles here, only a story told between fields. The quarter is thinly built, so the legs are long and the talking matters more than the looking.

Walenty Krzak is a fictional character, created for this walk. He is imagined as a coachman employed at the nineteenth-century manor house at Głogowa, driving the road through Cudniki, Jankowice and on to Miłonice. His life is invented; the places he names are real villages of Gmina Krośniewice, in Kutno County, Łódź Voivodeship. Nothing is claimed about the real families who lived in them.
