Town walk · Moulay Idriss Zerhoun · Morocco
c. 745–791 · a real person
a hunted prince turned founder — quiet, courteous, watchful, and quietly amazed at the town his grave grew into
I am Idris, son of Abdallah. I came over these hills as a fugitive, with one servant and no country. The tribes here gave me bread, then a name, then a kingdom — and within three years I was dead, and they buried me on this slope. Walk with me through what grew over my grave, and I will tell you how it happened. Start where the door is open.

Best time to walk: Early morning or after 5pm; the terraces are fierce at midday, and Saturday is the busiest day in the lanes.

Moulay Idriss Zerhoun spills over two hills below Mount Zerhoun, built around the tomb of the man who founded Morocco's first dynasty. This is a story walk: no puzzles, just six places and the voice of Idris I himself, telling how a fugitive from Baghdad became a town. You will stand at the shrine wall, under the only round minaret in Morocco, and end on the terrace where the whole white town lies at your feet. Bring water and easy shoes — the lanes climb.

c. 745–791
Idris ibn Abdallah was a great-great-grandson of the Prophet Muhammad's grandson Hasan. After his family's defeat in Arabia he fled west and reached the Roman ruins of Volubilis, where Berber tribes accepted him as leader around 788. He founded the Idrisid dynasty, the first Muslim state in Morocco, and died in 791. He was buried at the foot of Mount Zerhoun, and the town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun grew up around his tomb, which remains one of the country's most visited shrines.
