1837–1924 · a real person
a precise, dry old professor of mathematics who loves these mountains more than he admits
My name is Johannes Frischauf. I taught mathematics in Graz, and I spent my holidays measuring these mountains. People ask me why a man of numbers walks up a valley like this one. Today I will show you, from the small water at the bottom to the great water at the top. Walk with me; the valley only makes sense in one direction, upwards.

1 / 2
Best time to walk: Morning in summer: the valley floor is cool and shaded early, the falls carry most water in spring and after rain, and the climb to Okrešelj should not be started late in the day.
You’re walking this one before anyone at Walk & Tell has. If something looks wrong, tap Report at any stop — we’ll fix it for everyone after you.
A single line up the Logar Valley, from the little Palenk waterfall at the lower end to the Rinka Falls and the mountain hut that carries Johannes Frischauf's name. It is a story walk: no puzzles, only a man who measured these mountains telling you what he found. The valley holds 35 people on scattered farms, a glacier-cut trough ringed by peaks over 2,000 metres, and the cold spring where the Savinja begins. Note: all four must-see places lie on one line along the valley floor, so the walk runs longer than a town walk — about 6 km one way, with the last stop a steep climb above the falls.

Palenk waterfall
“Palenk, the Small Water”
A modest waterfall in the lower Logar Valley, the first running water of the walk.
Logar Valley
“The Valley Floor”
The protected glacial valley itself, named after the Logar Farm, home to 35 people on isolated farmsteads.
Rinka Waterfall
“Rinka Falls”
The valley's great cliffside cascade, reached by a short steep trek from the valley road.
Frischaufov dom na Okrešlju
“The Hut With My Name”
The mountain hut on the Okrešelj cirque above Rinka Falls, bearing Frischauf's name.
Frischauf surveyed, described and promoted the Savinja Alps around the Logar Valley, and the mountain hut on Okrešelj above Rinka Falls is named after him.

1837–1924
Johannes Frischauf (1837–1924) was an Austrian mathematician and astronomer who taught at the University of Graz. He was also one of the first systematic explorers and describers of the Savinja and Kamnik Alps, writing guides and promoting paths in these valleys. The hut on the Okrešelj cirque above the Logar Valley, Frischaufov dom na Okrešlju, carries his name. He died in 1924.
