Town walk · Bovec · Slovenia
1872–1934
An old mountain carter: dry, slow, fond of animals, suspicious of crowds, soft when he speaks of the dead.
My name is Jakob. I drove carts and sheep in this valley, and I knew every stone on the road out to the fields. Today they have put bronze animals in my village, and young people who jump off mountains with cloth wings. Walk with me from the village to the church in the meadow, the way I walked it every autumn. I will tell you what is here now, and what was here before.

1 / 2
Best time to walk: Morning or after 5pm; the village and the field road have little shade at midday, and the church in the fields is best in late light.
You’re walking this one before anyone at Walk & Tell has. If something looks wrong, tap Report at any stop — we’ll fix it for everyone after you.
A slow line through Bovec, from the bronze animals in the village to the old church standing alone in the meadow. The guide is a shepherd and carter who worked these roads before and after the First World War, when the valley was a front line. No puzzles: just seven places, a story at each, and something to notice with your own eyes. It ends where Bovec people have walked for centuries, out in the open fields under the mountains.

Invented for this walk: a Bovec shepherd and carter who drove the road between the village and the church in the fields, and lived through the 1917 gas attack in this valley.
1872–1934
Jakob is a fictional character, written as a man of his time and place. He is a shepherd and carter of Bovec, born in the 1870s, who moved sheep up to the high pastures in summer and hauled timber and hay in autumn. He lived through the First World War, when the Bovec basin was a front line and Italian soldiers died in a gas attack here in October 1917. His words are imagined; the places, dates and events he speaks of are real.
Jakob is a character created for this game.
