City walk · arrondissement de Tanger-Medina طنجة المدينة, Tangier · Morocco
a Tangier bookseller in his forties: dry, quick, generous with prices and blunt about tourist traps
I am Younes. I sell books near Rue Siaghine, and I have walked this line up to the Kasbah since I was a boy carrying my father's parcels. Today there is nothing to solve. I only want you to look at the right things, and to not overpay for coffee. Walk with me from the water to the citadel, and we will go uphill the whole way, slowly.
You’re walking this one before anyone at Walk & Tell has. If something looks wrong, tap Report at any stop — we’ll fix it for everyone after you.
One climb through the middle of Tangier, from a working quarter's wall fountain up through the new town, across the Grand Socco and into the medina and the Kasbah. It takes in the things a first-time visitor came for — the terrace over the port, the Grand Socco, the Mendoubia Gardens, the American Legation, the Petit Socco — and beside each one a small thing most people walk straight past. No puzzles: just a local talking the whole way. You will learn what coffee should cost and which door people actually use.

DirectionsBest from stop 1 — the story is told in order. Tap Start here on any stop to begin there instead; the guide will catch you up.
Fontaine Ain Ktiout
“The Water at Ain Ktiout”
A public wall fountain in the Ain Ktiout quarter, the kind of place a neighbourhood was built around.
Instituto Cervantes / Biblioteca Juan Goytisolo
“Spanish Words, Free Library”
The Instituto Cervantes and its Juan Goytisolo library, open every day until nine in the evening.
Mosque Mohammed V
“The Tallest Minaret”
The Mohammed V Mosque, completed in 1983, whose minaret is the tallest in Tangier.
La Terrasse des Paresseux
“The Terrace of the Idle”
A public terrace above the port, looking across the Strait of Gibraltar.
Bab Al Fahs
“Bab Al Fahs, the Grand Socco”
The great square and gateway at the mouth of the medina, the hinge of the whole city.
Mendoubia Gardens
“Under the Old Trees”
The shaded public garden that continues the Grand Socco, with a large marble fountain and benches.
American Legation, Tangier
“Number Eight, Rue Amerique”
The American Legation: the first American property abroad, a gift from a sultan, now a museum in the medina.
Petit Socco
“Petit Socco, Small and Sharp”
The little square at the heart of the medina, once banks and casinos, now cafés and chairs.
Kasbah
“Inside the Kasbah Walls”
The old citadel quarter on the highest ground, quiet lanes and a terrace above the port.
The walk passes these without stopping. Add one and the route bends to take it in — the guide has nothing to say about them, so you are on your own there.
He sells second-hand books off Rue Siaghine and walks this line between the new town and the Kasbah almost every day.
Younes is a composite of the men who keep the small bookstalls of Tangier: mid-forties, born in the city, schooled partly in Spanish, working in French and Arabic all day. He opens late, closes late, and drinks his first coffee standing up. He has opinions about what the medina has become and he still thinks the walk up to the Kasbah at six in the evening is the best free thing in Morocco.
Younes is a character created for this game.
